The paper

Editorial Standards

Facts over opinion. Root causes over headlines. The clerk may draft. The editor decides.

The four questions

  1. What happened?
  2. Why did it happen?
  3. What can be learned from it?
  4. What risks or opportunities emerge from it?

A package that cannot fill those from sources stays off the page.

Sources

Prefer primary records: OSHA, NTSB, CISA, NHTSA, FAA, CDC, EPA, NOAA, NWS, USGS, NASA, BLS, EIA, the Federal Register, WisDOT, DNR, DHS, PSC, county emergency management, city notices. Wire copy may color a brief. It is never the spine of Happened. We do not scrape another newspaper and rewrite it.

What we cover

Safety intelligence first — workplaces, infrastructure, cyber, transport, public and environmental risk. Then technology and science, history and work, Wisconsin. War and national politics are not a beat. If a world event has a primary record and a lesson, it can wait for a package.

Neutrality

No political desk. No endorsements. No cheerleading. Name the agency, the statute, the dollar, the injury. Leave the sermon to someone else.

The editor’s loop is in the Press Manual. Readers are owed the public version on this page.
